Hope

First, why not talk about some technicals about this image. I was really excited that this came out almost exactly how I wanted it to. I decided that I wanted to get the luminaries that lined the track in the shot and the field was sufficiently large that it wouldn’t have made all that interesting of a shot. So I came up with the idea of getting an image of the HOPE luminaries in the stand composed between two of the luminaries that lined the track.

Immediately I b-lined to the back of warning track (it was at Elfstrum Stadium, where the Kane CountCougars play, more on that later) and decided I needed to get on the ground. Using my wallet to prop up my lens, I set my camera to ISO 200, f13 and about 13 seconds. Focused on the luminaries close to me and then proceeded to lay in the dirt. Thankfully it was the end of the night :-) . I’m really happy with the way this came out, only that that would have been better would be if it was really dark out, but alas I had a deadline!

And then on to another topic…

This image was taken during the Relay for Life of Kane County at Elfstrom Stadium on Friday night. It had been a little bit of a long day, I had already been outside for a few hours at Geneva’s Swedish Days Festival and even the week itself had brought itself a lot of stress. My photo supervisor also mentioned that this assignment should make for some great shots. So right out the gate the bar was high.

So I get there, have to park pretty far away. I walk in during the opening ceremonies, make my way onto the field and get my bearings. It was at that point that the most simplist of realities hit me. The Relay for Life is a fundraiser for cancer, well for a cure for cancer; we all know that cancer has enough money (The Office reference, anyone?!). I have often heard about Relay for Life, but have never really thought about it.

Not very many of you readers (well, there may not be that many readers to begin with..) know that cancer is somthing that really has taken a hold in my life the last few years, most especially in the past few weeks. My grandma battled (and is in remission) breast cancer a few years ago, but that never really troubled me because it all seemed like everything was okay and never had to worry.

But then a few weeks ago my mom found out that she has brain cancer. And not just any brain cancer (is there regular brain cancer?) its a rare type of brain cancer that might actually be a more rare form of brain cancer. Who knows, its all a waiting game right now. She is also only 41, which is even crazier. I have had a pretty tough time processing how I am supposed to react to this, still don’t.

Anyway, back to the Relay. I remember getting onto the field, stay close to the 1st base side wall and took a look around. There was a section of people on the field wearing purple shirts, all of whom had battled and survived cancer. There were kids as young as 3-4 and many much older. And then I thought about the luminaries. Each of those luminaries represents the life of someone lost to cancer. There were just short of 3,000 luminaries around Elfstrom Stadium. It was that that really struck me. There are so many people that have survived, but even more that have lost. Of course that is kind of the way that life shakes out, but still.

I can’t even truly and adequately describe what it was that I felt in those moments. But I do know that really there are millions of people that strugle with cancer. More encouraging though are the tens of millions of friends and family that are bend each of the people struggling with cancer. That is really the crux of the Relay for Life. Its not to show how many people have lost, but to encourage those caring for and fighting the disease. Truly remarkable the work that Relay for Life does and the money they raise for research.

At this point, I barely know what I am saying and feel as though I am circling my point.. So while “hope” is the buzz word of the past year plus, I think that at times its nearly all we have; its the last thing to cling to and the last remaining item in Pandor’s Box.

Thanks for reading,
KS

Big post coming at you. I’ve been busy since that Cubs vs Sox game! I must say, one of my favorite parts of this job is getting to watching some people’s anticts. Quite amusing.

Whew! That was a lot of work. Do I have anything witty or interesting to add as a post-post anecdote? I think I can reach for something.

I have made two interesting observations over the last two weeks, with regards to this photojournalism-world I am visiting for a brief moment in time. The first, not many people in this industry have heard of Amazon’s Kindle, or e-ink readers in general. Maybe its just that not many people are technology heads like me, which is a fair point. But at the same time, these kinds of devices have the potential to do for the print/news/newpaper/etc. industry what the iPod did for a stagnating music industry. What’s that? The option to survive. Of course, much like the first iterations of the iPod and other MP3 players, these devices are not fully ready to trnasform the industry; price is still a significant draw back. Mark my words, once these devices become cheaper and have color screens, its game-on! There are even prototype screens that are flexible and an be rolled up! This technology is quite exciting, amazing and not only game-chaning, but really game-saving devices. Good on ya Amazon. (note: I have an Amazon Kindle 2, and its amazing)

The second observation is that there are an awful lot of pessimists in this industry. Its not unjustified; eveyday papers are making cut backs, trying to find any way they can to survive. This is a tough time for this industry. But not all tough-times gaurantee total failure. Its not like people don’t need news any more, or pictures or what ever. There are changes happening, thats for sure. But once the newspapers can hit their stride and find out what they need to do to continue the important work they do, there will be a future. I don’t know what that looks like quite yet, (HINT: LOOK AT THE AMAZON KINDLE AND OTHER SIMILAR DEVICES!!!!!!!) but I’m excited to see how it looks on the other end. In the meantime, all you photojournalists out there, have hope for the future! Except you Scott, you know which ways up ;-) .

Okay, I was thinking of some other things to say, but this is probably the limits of what you are willing to read at this point. Actually, that is a bonus third point, and why newspaper websites are the only future. It sucks reading a lot on a computer screen. And I don’t have a dozen flashy flash ads surrounding my content with far-too-small pictures. Websites are only an intermediate medium until somthing better comes along (HINT: LOOK AT THE AMAZON KINDLE AND OTHER SIMILAR DEVICES!!!!!!!).

That is all, for real this time.

Peace,
KS

New post time! Been a few days behind on getting some of these up. Got some time now! Went to shot a rehearsal for a local production called the Legends of Music. I kind of liked some of the shots I got from it which is great because it was a hard situation to shoot it.

And now. The Legends of Wrigley. Well they aren’t all legends, but I got to shoot the Cubs vs. Sox game this past Wednesday. Was quite the experience, but I wish I could have shot at different locations, which isn’t really possible at Wrigley Field. So here it is.

As usual, thanks for stopping by! I also added a new feature to my blog. If you try to come here on a mobile phone (any, blackberry, iPhone, palm etc) my wedsite will automatically resize the pictures and font to fit on you phone! The result is a page that loads a TON faster for you and doesn’t require any work on my end :-) . And it was free! Check out Mobify.me for details.

I also got accepted onto SportsShooter.com! Its a semi-tough place to gain membership to, all applications have to submit a portfolio of 10 images and then are approved or denied based on those images. I finally decided that I had enough good stuff with captions to go ahead and apply. And I got accepted!

Well, off to start another day at the Daily Herald! Maybe I will get assigned to watch out for Spiderman, hint hint ;-)

Peace,
KS

So I have decided that I wanted to put up a feed of nearly all of my internship photos. I say nearly, but the only things I have didn’t put in where 70-80 graduation pictures cuz no one cares :)

Anyway, I added a tab above that links to a SlideShow Pro player with everything in it. Here, I have only posted about 20% of the images I have submitted for publication (not printed, submitted. Big difference!)

Enjoy! Leave comments if you feel so inclined.

Its a wrap.

Alright! That was two grueling/fun/insane/tiring/spectacular/sensational/scrumptious days! Glad its over, but I would do it all again for sure!

Dr. Strazz, it was great shooting around you these two days. Learned a ton and laughed even more :) . Hope I get the opportunity again soon. I guess I can say a few more words about you… Haha. Its neat because of all of the photojournalists I have been talking to over the last month or so, you were really one of the first I had talked to that wasn’t all doom-and-gloom over the current state of affairs in the newspaper/PJ world. So many of said that it was over, there are no more jobs and any that exist will be gone soon. And while things may be rough, you were the first in a long while to make me excited for the future still. These last three weeks of my internship have told me that this is what I want to do, at least for a good long while. So here’s to hoping I can find a job in the near future :) . Thanks again. Really! (BTW, check out more of his shots from the weekend. It is worth the time!

Grand time!

And now, some extra shots! All four of the Daily Herald’s teams lost in the first round, if you remember. I decided to run down and shoot reaction shots from the end of the Class 4A finals game, with Loyola and Edwardsville. I didn’t shoot any action from the game, but I wanted to see if I could get some good reax shots from the state champtions for my portfolio. Rawk.
